Guide
Moving abroad with kids
Kids adjust to international moves better than most parents expect — but the logistics around them are the most front-loaded part of the move. Start the school search before you finalize the city.
The school decision drives the city
Most international schools have spring deadlines and limited grade-level seats. Decide on public local-language vs. private bilingual vs. international curriculum (IB, American, British) first, then pick a neighborhood within reach. International school tuition ranges from $8k–$35k per child per year depending on country.
Documents to gather before you leave
Apostilled birth certificates, apostilled marriage certificate (for visa dependent applications), full vaccination records translated, last two years of school transcripts (translated for non-English-speaking countries), and a notarized travel-consent letter from any non-traveling parent. Don't wait until the last month — apostilles can take 4–6 weeks per state.
Healthcare and continuity
Bring a 90-day supply of any prescription medication plus the doctor's letter naming the medication. Confirm the destination country's equivalent is available — some ADHD and pain medications are restricted or unavailable. Get dental work done before the move; new-country dentistry while uninsured is expensive.
